About
Janitor AI is a web-based platform for creating and chatting with AI-powered characters, positioned as a giant roleplay sandbox. Users pick from community-created personas across fantasy, romance, anime, and games, or build their own with a name, avatar, personality description, scenario, and example dialogues. Launched in June 2023, it drew over a million users in its first week and reached around 2.5 million daily active users by mid-2026.
It is LLM-agnostic: alongside its own JanitorLLM it supports plugging in external models via API keys (OpenAI, Anthropic, OpenRouter), giving control over cost and quality. The platform is free to use with a paid tier for higher limits, and mobile apps entered public beta in February 2026. It is still in beta, so expect occasional downtime, message limits, and uneven response quality; external API usage is pay-as-you-go through the model provider.
