About

Instapaper pioneered the read-it-later category in 2008, founded by Marco Arment, and after passing through Betaworks and Pinterest it has been independent again as Instant Paper, Inc. since 2018. The core loop is unchanged and refined: save articles from the browser extensions or mobile apps, and read them later in a clean, distraction-free reader with customizable fonts, margins, and themes, on iPhone, Android, Mac, and the web, with offline reading and Kobo e-reader integration built in.

The free tier covers unlimited saves, folders, cross-device sync, and API access, with notes capped at five a month and speed-reading at ten articles a month. Premium at $5.99 a month or $59.99 a year adds full-text search, a permanent article archive, Kindle delivery, the PDF reader, AI text-to-speech voices, and unlimited notes and speed-reading. Development pace is slow and several recent additions landed behind Premium, which reads as maintenance mode to some and rock-solid stability to others. No independent benchmarks are published; the reading-experience quality claims are provider-claimed and reviewer-corroborated.

Trust score — 8/10

/10 trustVerified

Scored 8/10 (verified tier, metrics-v1). Evidence: operating continuously since 2008 through Betaworks, Pinterest, and back to independent ownership; 2026 reviews confirm the free tier (unlimited saves, sync, folders) and Premium at $5.99/mo or $59.99/yr with full-text search, Kindle, and PDF reading. Strengths: the most mature and stable read-later service left standing, generous free tier, strong Pocket-migration story. Docked for: (1) slow development pace that some reviewers read as maintenance mode; (2) search and permanent archive locked behind Premium; (3) no independent benchmarks. License: proprietary freemium.
