Infracost

Shift FinOps left: cloud cost estimates for Terraform right in your pull requests.

About

Infracost is an open-source FinOps tool that estimates the monthly cost of cloud infrastructure before it is deployed. It parses Terraform plans (and state), looks up resources in a pricing database synced from AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud price lists, and posts the cost delta as a pull-request comment, so reviewers see the financial impact of a change alongside the diff.

The CLI is free and open source with a free Cloud Pricing API; Infracost Cloud adds governance features like tag policies, FinOps policies, and cost guardrails. It integrates with GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Azure DevOps, Jenkins, Atlantis, and editors, and works with Terraform, Terragrunt, and (via community support) other IaC. Limitations: estimates cover on-demand list prices and need usage files for usage-based resources; governance and policy enforcement require the paid cloud tier; and cost data accuracy depends on keeping usage estimates current.

What it can do

  • Pre-deploy cost estimates
  • Pull-request cost-diff comments
  • Terraform, Terragrunt, multi-cloud
  • CI/CD integrations
  • Usage-based cost modeling
  • FinOps policy guardrails (cloud tier)

Setup

Install the CLI, run infracost auth login for a free API key, then infracost breakdown --path .

Prerequisites

A Terraform (or Terragrunt) project; a free Infracost API key for pricing lookups.
