Huntress
Human-led managed detection and response built for SMBs and the MSPs that serve them.
About
Huntress sells a security outcome rather than a security tool. Every licence includes a managed detection and response service: lightweight agents on endpoints feed a 24/7 human-led Security Operations Center that investigates alerts, verifies threats, and provides detailed, actionable incident reports, so small businesses without in-house security expertise only ever see the alerts that matter. On Windows and macOS the agent layers on top of built-in defences like Microsoft Defender rather than replacing them; on Linux it provides standalone EDR.
The platform has expanded from endpoints into identity: Huntress MDR for Microsoft 365 actively monitors logins, configuration, and mail rules for business email compromise, with instant lockdown capabilities for compromised accounts. The company adds early-detection mechanisms such as ransomware canaries and persistent-foothold detection, and the vendor claims under 1 percent false positives. Huntress is sold primarily through managed service providers and priced per endpoint at levels accessible to small organizations. Detection-rate and false-positive figures are vendor-reported; I have not independently tested them.
What it can do
- 24/7 human-led SOC with every licence
- Managed EDR for Windows, macOS, Linux
- MDR for Microsoft 365: logins, config, mail rules
- Business email compromise detection
- Ransomware canaries and persistent-foothold detection
- External attack surface reconnaissance
- Security awareness training
- MSP-focused multi-tenant management
Setup
- Sign up through huntress.com directly or via your managed service provider.
- Deploy the lightweight agent to endpoints (Windows, macOS, Linux) and connect your Microsoft 365 tenant.
- The Huntress SOC begins 24/7 monitoring; investigated incidents arrive with remediation steps.
- Approve one-click remediation actions or let the SOC contain threats directly.
Prerequisites
Windows/macOS endpoints with Microsoft Defender or equivalent AV (or Linux for standalone EDR); a Microsoft 365 tenant for identity protection; managed via direct purchase or an MSP partner.
Use cases
Works with
Trust score — 8/10
Scored 8/10 (TIER verified, metrics-v1). Evidence: long operating history serving the SMB/MSP market; human-led 24/7 SOC included with every licence rather than sold as an add-on; strong MSP channel reputation corroborated by independent comparisons; documented incident outcomes from customers. Strengths: outcome-based model fits organizations with no security staff, accessible per-endpoint pricing, genuine human analysis behind alerts. Docked for: (1) detection and false-positive figures are vendor-reported, not independently tested; (2) endpoint- and identity-led coverage is narrower than full cross-environment MDR from enterprise rivals. License: proprietary.
