Humata
Ask questions across your PDFs and get answers with highlighted references.
About
Humata is an AI chatbot built for documents. Upload PDF, Word, or PowerPoint files, ask questions in plain language, and it answers from the content of your own files with page-level references so you can check the source. It was founded by Cyrus Khajvandi, a Stanford biology graduate and two-time entrepreneur, and Dan Rasmuson joined as CTO; the platform launched in February 2023 aimed first at keeping up with scientific journals, then expanded into law, oil and gas, customer support, and enterprise knowledge work.
The company raised $3.5 million from investors including Google's Gradient Ventures, ARK Invest, and M13, TechCrunch reported in October 2023, at which point it said it had processed tens of millions of pages and grown to millions of users. Pricing runs freemium: a free Basic tier with a monthly page limit, paid tiers around $14.99 per month for larger page allowances and multi-file Q&A, plus team and enterprise plans. The vendor emphasizes data privacy, saying user data is owned by the user and not used for training without consent.
The honest limitation is that Humata inherits the truthfulness problem of the models it runs on. It pioneered the chat-with-your-document category before general chatbots added file analysis, and its narrow focus is pitched as a robustness advantage, but reviewers consistently advise verifying answers against the highlighted source passages rather than trusting them outright.

Trust score — 6/10
Scored 6/10 (metrics tier, metrics-v1). Evidence: $3.5M raised from Gradient Ventures, ARK Invest, M13; millions of users and tens of millions of pages processed per founder claims (TechCrunch, Oct 2023); 4.7/5 on Revoyant. Docs corroboration: feature set corroborated by yeschat.ai and educational.tools; free Basic tier with 60 pages/mo and Pro at $14.99/mo per third-party reviews. Strengths: credible founders, real venture backing, early mover in chat-with-document with explicit privacy posture. Docked for: (1) user and usage figures are vendor-reported with no independent audit; (2) documented truthfulness problem means answers need manual verification (yeschat.ai); (3) current pricing tiers are thinly documented on the official site, forcing reliance on third-party reviews. License: proprietary SaaS.
