About

Hugo is the reference static site generator: a single Go binary with no runtime dependencies, databases, or interpreters — download it and run. Created by Steve Francia in 2013 and led by Bjørn Erik Pedersen since v0.14 (2015), it renders complete sites in milliseconds even at large scale, and its own homepage counts roughly 90,000 GitHub stars as of October 2026.

Content is written in Markdown, HTML, AsciiDoc, or Org-mode with front matter; the Go template language drives layouts, with multilingual support, taxonomies, shortcodes, menus, and table-of-contents generation built in. Asset pipelines cover image processing, JavaScript bundling (TypeScript/JSX, tree shaking), Sass, and Tailwind CSS. Sites deploy anywhere static files go — S3, GitHub Pages, any host — and cloud CMSs like Decap or TinaCMS can bolt on an editorial UI. Notable adopters include Smashing Magazine and Cloudflare's developer docs (per Wikipedia). Honest limits: the Go template syntax is an acquired taste for non-Go developers, and there is no plugin architecture — customization means templates and shortcodes. Stable release 0.166.0 landed September 2026.

Trust score — 9/10

/10 trustVerified

Scored 9/10 (VERIFIED tier, metrics-v1). Evidence: Apache-2.0 license, ~90,000 GitHub stars (gohugo.io, Oct 2026), 2013 origin and Pedersen leadership corroborated via Wikipedia; Smashing Magazine and Cloudflare Docs adoptions documented. Strengths: unmatched build speed, zero-dependency single binary, huge theme ecosystem, decade-plus maintenance record. Docked for: (1) Go template syntax is unfriendly to newcomers; (2) no plugin architecture — extensibility is template-bound. License: Apache-2.0 (open source).
