Grafana k6
JavaScript-based load testing integrated with observability.
About
k6 is an open-source load testing tool from Grafana Labs where test scenarios are written in JavaScript rather than XML configs. You define virtual users, ramp stages, thresholds, and checks in code, run locally, in CI, or distributed in Grafana Cloud, and fail builds when SLO thresholds breach.
Grafana has been pushing it deeper into the observability stack: Grafana Cloud k6 correlates test results with real-time application telemetry, and k6 Studio lowers the barrier with a visual authoring environment. GigaOm named Grafana Labs a Leader and Outperformer in cloud performance testing in 2025, and AI teams increasingly use k6 to baseline API and agent latency before capacity commitments.
What it can do
- Load scenarios written as JavaScript code
- Threshold-based pass and fail gates for CI
- Ramping, spike, and soak test profiles
- Correlation with Grafana observability telemetry
- k6 Studio for visual test authoring
Setup
brew install k6 or use the official grafana/k6 Docker image; write a script.js and run k6 run script.js.
Prerequisites
A target API or application; Docker optional for containerized runs.
