GPTScript
Natural-language scripting language for automating LLM interactions.
About
GPTScript was the Acorn Labs team's early experiment in making LLM automation feel like scripting rather than prompt engineering. Scripts are written mostly in plain English: a tool call, a data source, or a chain of reasoning steps reads like a sentence, and the runtime turns those natural-language instructions into model calls, shell commands, and API invocations.\n\nThe project was open sourced under the gptscript-ai organization and picked up a small ecosystem of editor modes and community tooling. Development quieted after 2024 as the Acorn team shifted focus toward adjacent agent tooling such as Acorn.js, so GPTScript is included here as a historical entry: an influential early attempt at the natural-language-as-code idea that later agent frameworks adopted in different forms.
What it can do
- Natural-language syntax for defining tools and automation steps
- Chains of model calls, shell commands, and API invocations in one script
- Community editor modes including an Emacs major mode
- Tool-calling integration patterns later adopted by agent frameworks
Setup
Clone the gptscript-ai/gptscript repository and build the CLI from source, or use one of the community mirrors.
Prerequisites
An LLM provider API key for the models the scripts call.
