About

Gitpod pioneered the cloud development environment category: spin up a fresh, prebuilt workspace in the browser from any repo, branch, or pull request, configured as code via .gitpod.yml. Prebuilds compile dependencies ahead of time so developers start coding in seconds, and workspaces are ephemeral, which made it a favorite for onboarding, contract work, and reproducible reviews.

In September 2025 Gitpod rebranded to Ona, repositioning as mission control for software projects and AI coding agents rather than just hosted workspaces. The older Gitpod Classic architecture was retired in favor of a runner-based model (Gitpod Flex) that can run inside a team's own cloud account, keeping source code and IP within a private network. Pay-as-you-go pricing on the classic product sunset on October 15, 2025, so teams following old tutorials should verify current docs before copying legacy configuration examples.

For AI teams, the interesting move is the agent angle: environments that are API-accessible and machine-comprehensible give coding agents the same reproducible sandbox every developer gets. The rebrand carries execution risk, though, and the company remains small at roughly 80 employees with $38M+ in total funding reported.
