About

GitButler is a Git-backed change-management client founded in 2023 by GitHub co-founder Scott Chacon. Its core idea is virtual branches: work on multiple streams simultaneously in a single working directory, with the tool separating changes into structured patch series, first-class stacked pull requests, unlimited undo, and easy commit editing. It ships as a Tauri + Rust GUI, a terminal UI, and a CLI, and is open source.

GitButler is explicitly built for the AI-agent era: it integrates with Claude Code, Cursor, and other coding agents, capturing the prompt and reasoning behind agent-written commits so changes carry an auditable record, and it exposes an MCP server. In April 2026 it raised a $17M Series A led by Andreessen Horowitz to build version-control infrastructure for agentic workflows. Limitations: the virtual-branch model is a paradigm shift that can confuse Git veterans; PR review beyond GitHub is thinner than dedicated clients; and the CLI for trunk-based workflows remains in technical preview.

What it can do

  • Virtual branches (parallel streams, one directory)
  • Stacked pull requests
  • Unlimited undo
  • AI commit messages
  • Claude Code/Cursor agent integration
  • MCP server
  • Trunk-flow CLI (preview)
