FumaDocs
The beautiful, flexible React docs framework — MDX docs without the boilerplate.
About
Fumadocs is an open-source documentation framework for React: you write MDX in a content folder and get a polished docs site with sidebar navigation, table of contents, breadcrumbs, dark mode, full-text search, and OpenAPI reference generation. It is officially supported on Next.js (App Router native), Astro, and Vite-based setups (TanStack Start, Waku, React Router), split into composable packages — fumadocs-core for the content engine, fumadocs-ui for the theme and components — so you adopt as much or as little as you want.
The project's philosophy is "less magic, more composability": content collections are plain files, layouts are components you own, and interactive docs primitives (callouts, tabs, code blocks, cards) ship as importable React components. With ~13,400 GitHub stars, MIT license, ESM-only packages, and thousands of releases, it is one of the most actively maintained docs frameworks in the React ecosystem — the pragmatic answer when Docusaurus feels too opinionated and hand-rolled MDX feels like too much work.
Getting started is a single command (npx create-fumadocs-app). The main caveat is the obvious one: it's React-only, so non-React stacks should look at Mintlify or Starlight instead. i18n and versioning are supported for teams that outgrow a single-language docs site.
What it can do
- MDX content collections with file-system routing
- Built-in full-text search API and sidebar/TOC/breadcrumb navigation
- OpenAPI spec → API reference page generation
- Composable UI primitives: callouts, tabs, cards, code blocks, steps
- i18n and docs versioning support; dark mode out of the box
- ESM-only packages for Next.js, Astro, TanStack Start, Waku, React Router
Setup
npx create-fumadocs-appandcdinto the project.- Write MDX files under
content/docs/— folders become routes. - Customize layout, theme, and components via fumadocs-ui.
npm run devto preview; deploy to Vercel or any static host.
Prerequisites
Node.js 18+; a React framework project (Next.js recommended). MDX familiarity for authoring.

Trust score — 9/10
Scored 9/10 (verified tier, metrics-v1). Evidence: 13,378 GitHub stars (fuma-nama/fumadocs); MIT license confirmed via GitHub API; repo pushed 2026-10-15 (same-day activity); 2,191 releases; Officially supports Next.js, Astro, TanStack Start, Waku, React Router — verified against repo README; MDX collections, full-text search, OpenAPI reference generation verified against docs and community guides. Manual review: 'less magic, more composability' design is evident in the package split; React-only is the honest scope limit. License: MIT.
