About

Emissary-ingress is an open-source, Kubernetes-native API gateway and Layer 7 load balancer built on Envoy Proxy. It is configured through Kubernetes custom resources, supports authentication, rate limiting, canary releases, circuit breaking, and a subset of the Kubernetes Gateway API, and it is a CNCF incubating project.

It began life as Ambassador, the Envoy-based ingress from Ambassador Labs. In July 2025 Gravitee acquired Ambassador Labs to accelerate its agentic API and event-management platform, folding Edge Stack (the commercial product built on Emissary) and Blackbird into Gravitee's portfolio. The open-source emissary-ingress repository remains actively maintained (commits as of October 2026) under the emissary-ingress GitHub org. For teams it is a solid Envoy-native ingress option, with the caveat that the product roadmap now runs through Gravitee.

What it can do

  • Envoy-based L7 load balancing and ingress
  • Kubernetes CRD configuration with self-service Mappings
  • Authentication and rate-limit services
  • Canary releases, circuit breaking, automatic retries
  • Kubernetes Gateway API subset support
  • Edge Stack commercial distribution via Gravitee

Setup

kubectl apply the Emissary-ingress YAML install, then define Mappings (or Gateway API HTTPRoutes) for your services.

Prerequisites

Kubernetes cluster; kubectl.

Trust score — 7/10

/10 trustMetrics-checked

Scored 7/10 (metrics tier, metrics-v1). Evidence: Gravitee acquisition documented in acquisition press; star count and recent commits read from GitHub; CNCF incubation status from the project's own docs. Strengths: mature Envoy-native ingress with real adoption, CNCF incubation, still actively maintained post-acquisition. Docked for: (1) roadmap now controlled by Gravitee, creating uncertainty for the standalone OSS trajectory; (2) thinner independent evidence base than the tier-1 gateways. License: Apache-2.0.
