EbSynth
Turn video into hand-painted animation by editing a single keyframe.
About
EbSynth is a standalone VFX tool that transforms video footage by letting an artist paint or edit one or more keyframes, then automatically propagates the style across the entire video using texture-synthesis algorithms. The result is temporally coherent stylized video: oil-painted sequences, digital makeup, rotoscoping, colorization, and style transfer without frame-by-frame manual work.
It is widely used for hand-drawn animation effects over live action, music videos, and experimental film, and it exports directly to After Effects. EbSynth is a free download for Windows and macOS with a Pro plan for higher resolutions.
Limitations: there is no mobile version, no API, no real-time editing, and it only supports painting-based transformations. It is a focused artist's tool, not a general video editor, and the free beta status means the long-term product roadmap is unclear.
What it can do
- Paint one keyframe, propagate style across the video
- Hand-painted animation and oil-painting effects
- Retouching, digital makeup, and colorization
- Rotoscoping without manual tracking
- Guided texture synthesis and content-aware inpainting
- Direct export to After Effects
Setup
Download the free beta for Windows or macOS from the official site.
