Drizzle
Lightweight, SQL-like TypeScript ORM with zero-overhead queries.
Acquired — still operating
PlanetScale acquired core team Mar 2026
About
Drizzle is a TypeScript ORM that deliberately stays close to SQL: you write queries in a relational, SQL-like API with full type inference instead of learning a custom query language. It supports Postgres, MySQL, SQLite and serverless drivers (Neon, PlanetScale, Turso, Cloudflare D1), ships Drizzle Kit for migrations and Drizzle Studio as a database browser, and is MIT licensed with no paid tier. By late 2025 it had passed 30,000 GitHub stars and roughly doubled its npm downloads year over year, closing the gap with Prisma as the default ORM in AI-generated TypeScript stacks.
Drizzle is a bootstrapped company: the team of about 21 (based in Ukraine) reached profitability in 2024 without VC funding, then in March 2026 PlanetScale acquired the Drizzle core team, giving the project a corporate sponsor. Companies including Replit, Sentry and Databricks use Drizzle libraries. The lean, explicit style suits agent-generated code, where predictable SQL output matters more than magic.
What it can do
- SQL-like relational query builder with full TypeScript type inference
- Drizzle Kit: schema push, migrations, introspection and seeding
- Drizzle Studio: visual database browser and SQL console
- Native support for serverless drivers and edge runtimes
Setup
npm install drizzle-orm and a driver (e.g. postgres), plus drizzle-kit as a dev dependency.
Prerequisites
Node.js 18+, a SQL database; basic SQL knowledge helps since the API mirrors SQL.
