Diffblue Cover

Autonomous AI unit-test writer for Java.

Visit official site →

About

Diffblue Cover uses reinforcement learning over Java bytecode analysis to write unit tests autonomously — the first commercial-grade AI test generator for Java, from a company founded in 2016. It runs as a CI pipeline step, supports JUnit 4 and 5 with deep Spring Boot specialization, and commits generated tests automatically.

Limitations are real: it is Java-only, enterprise-focused with pricing not publicly listed (direct sales), and there is no public free tier. Teams outside the JVM get nothing from it, and generated tests cover behavior the code already has rather than behavior it should have.

What it can do

  • Autonomous JUnit 4/5 test generation via reinforcement learning
  • Bytecode-level analysis for deep coverage
  • Spring Boot specialization
  • CI pipeline integration with automated commits
  • On-premise deployment option

Setup

  1. Contact Diffblue for a license; install the Cover CLI or IntelliJ plugin.
  2. Point Cover at your Java project (Maven or Gradle).
  3. Run Cover to generate JUnit tests; review the generated suite.
  4. Add Cover as a CLI step in your CI pipeline for ongoing generation.

Prerequisites

A Java project using Maven or Gradle; a Diffblue Cover license.
