DevPod
Open-source, client-only dev environments as code — self-hosted Codespaces on any infrastructure.
About
DevPod is Loft Labs' open-source answer to GitHub Codespaces: reproducible, disposable development environments defined by a devcontainer.json, spun up on any infrastructure you choose — local Docker, Kubernetes, AWS EC2, or any reachable remote machine. Unlike cloud-hosted alternatives, DevPod is entirely client-side: there is no server component or vendor backend, so you are never locked into a platform for where your environments run.
Through its provider system (machine providers for VMs, non-machine providers for containers/SSH/Kubernetes), every workspace is managed identically whether it lives on your laptop, a GPU cloud box, or a spare remote machine. It supports VS Code (browser or desktop), JetBrains IDEs, and SSH for any other editor, with features like prebuilds, credential sync, and auto-sleep for cost control. DevPod is free and open source — Loft monetizes its broader platform-engineering portfolio (vCluster and others) rather than DevPod itself.
What it can do
- Dev environments as code via the devcontainer.json standard
- Provider system for Docker, Kubernetes, AWS, SSH, and custom backends
- Client-only architecture — no vendor backend or lock-in
- Auto-sleep, prebuilds, and Git/Docker credential sync
Setup
Install via the DevPod desktop app or curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/loft-sh/devpod/master/scripts/install.sh | sh, then add a provider (Docker, Kubernetes, AWS) and create workspaces from any repo with a devcontainer.json.
Prerequisites
Docker or a Kubernetes cluster or cloud account for the backend; VS Code or a JetBrains IDE.
