Cursor Background Agents
Async coding agents that run on Cursor-managed remote machines and return pull requests.
About
Cursor Background Agents, shipped out of beta in Cursor 0.50 (May 2025), let you kick off coding agents that run on Anysphere-managed remote machines instead of your own machine. Each agent clones the repository, works the task asynchronously, and returns its work as a branch or pull request for human review.
You can fan out several agents in parallel from the editor or from Slack and web integrations, then review and merge the resulting PRs. Background-agent compute is metered on top of the Pro ($20/mo) and Business ($40/mo) tiers, and the model is review-gated: the agent proposes, a human reviews the pull request.
What it can do
- Async agents running on Cursor-managed remote machines
- Parallel fan-out: run several agents against a repo at once
- Trigger from the editor, Slack, or web integrations
- Results delivered as reviewable branches and pull requests
Setup
Available inside the Cursor editor (0.50+) and via Slack/web integrations. Start a background agent from the command palette or chat.
Prerequisites
A Cursor Pro or Business subscription for metered background-agent compute.
