Convex is an open-source, TypeScript-first backend platform: you define schemas, queries, mutations, and actions in pure TypeScript with end-to-end type safety, and the reactive database automatically pushes updates to clients when underlying data changes — no manual WebSocket or cache-invalidation code. Built in: authentication (80+ OAuth integrations, works with Clerk/Auth0), cron jobs, file storage, full-text and vector search, and installable backend components (rate limiting, presence) via npm. It is self-hostable with Docker and Postgres, and SOC 2 / HIPAA / GDPR compliant on the managed cloud. Convex Chef (chef.convex.dev), its open-source AI app builder forked from bolt.diy, generates full-stack real-time apps from a prompt — the TypeScript-only backend model makes it unusually friendly to AI code generation.

The honest picture: the developer experience is excellent and the 'AI writes correct backend code' claim is unusually credible because there is simply less code to get wrong. The tradeoff is lock-in to Convex's query model instead of SQL, and pricing scales per developer ($25/dev/month on Pro) plus usage. Teams already deep in Postgres may prefer to stay there; teams starting fresh get velocity.
