About

Continue was an open-source AI coding agent available as a VS Code extension, JetBrains plugin, and terminal CLI (cn). It offered agent mode, chat, inline edit, and autocomplete, and federated to any LLM provider (Anthropic, OpenAI, Mistral, OpenRouter, Ollama) plus a Continue-managed proxy, with configuration in config.yaml and shared assistants via Continue Hub. Continue was acquired by Cursor (acqui-hire announced 2026-06-16) and shut down: the final 2.0.0 release shipped 2026-06-19, the GitHub repository is read-only, cloud-hosted data was deleted after 2026-07-15, and there will be no further updates or security patches. The Apache-2.0 codebase remains available to fork; the final release removed anonymous telemetry and authentication. Do not adopt for new projects.

What it can do

  • • Agent mode for multi-step development tasks with planning and tool use
  • • Chat mode with codebase context for Q&A about code
  • • Edit mode for inline code modifications from selected code
  • • Autocomplete for inline code suggestions as you type
  • • Model routing: any LLM provider (Anthropic, OpenAI, Mistral, OpenRouter, Ollama, Continue proxy)
  • • Shareable configuration via config.yaml and (formerly) Continue Hub registry of assistants/models/rules/MCP servers
  • • MCP server support for extended tool/network access
  • • Final 2.0.0 shipped with anonymous telemetry removed and authentication pulled out

Setup

  1. (Historical — final 2.0.0, no new installs recommended) Install the VS Code extension from the Marketplace (or OpenVSX), the JetBrains plugin, or the CLI (cn) from npm.
  2. Create/edit your local config.yaml with explicit model definitions (the final release removed Hub slugs).
  3. Add your provider API key (or point at local Ollama); restart the editor/CLI.
  4. Select the assistant in the Continue panel and use agent, chat, edit, or autocomplete modes.
  5. Note: existing installs with a local config.yaml reportedly keep working, but no fixes will land when provider APIs change.

Prerequisites

VS Code, JetBrains IDE, or a terminal for the CLI. An LLM provider API key (or self-hosted Ollama) — Continue was BYOK with no vendor lock-in. The extension was free and open source; paid Continue Hub tiers (Starter/Team/Company) were shut down with the product.
