CodeWhisperer
Amazon's AI coding companion, rebranded as Q Developer in 2024.
About
Amazon CodeWhisperer was an AI-powered coding companion launched by AWS in 2022, trained on billions of lines of code to generate real-time code suggestions inside the IDE. It offered code completion, security scanning, and reference tracking that flagged suggestions resembling open-source training data. In Amazon's own productivity challenge, developers using it were reported to complete tasks 57% faster on average.
In April 2024, Amazon folded CodeWhisperer into Amazon Q Developer, expanding it from pure code completion into an agentic assistant that debugs, tests, refactors, and transforms code across the software development lifecycle. CodeWhisperer remains a notable historical entry: it was AWS's first mainstream answer to GitHub Copilot and the direct ancestor of the Q Developer product line.
