Coder
Self-hosted cloud dev environments: Terraform-defined workspaces for devs and AI agents.
About
Coder is an open-source platform for self-hosted cloud development environments, aimed at teams that want cloud workspaces on infrastructure they control. Workspace templates are defined in Terraform — from EC2 VMs to Kubernetes pods to Docker containers — and developers spin them up on demand, connecting through VS Code, JetBrains, Cursor, a web terminal, or SSH over a secure WireGuard tunnel. Idle workspaces shut down automatically to control cloud spend. In 2025 Coder pivoted its positioning toward AI: ephemeral AI Workspaces where coding agents run with scoped agent boundaries, Coder Tasks for managing agent runs, and a Registry of templates including Claude Code modules.
The honest picture: self-hosted means you operate it — the Community edition is free forever, but the servers, scaling, and template maintenance are yours. Enterprise governance features (SSO, audit logging, advanced access controls) sit in the paid Premium tier with custom pricing. For solo developers the operational overhead rarely pays off versus managed alternatives; Coder's sweet spot is platform teams standardizing environments for dozens of engineers and their agents.
What it can do
- Terraform-defined reproducible workspaces
- Ephemeral AI agent workspaces with access boundaries
- Automatic shutdown of idle workspaces
- Connect via VS Code, JetBrains, Cursor, SSH, or web
Setup
Self-host via Docker or Kubernetes with the official install script, then define workspace templates in Terraform through the dashboard or CLI.
Prerequisites
Infrastructure to host it (Docker, Kubernetes, or VMs); Terraform familiarity for authoring templates.
