Codeium
The free AI code completion tool that became Windsurf — and then Devin Desktop.
Rebranded
Rebranded to Windsurf in 2025; acquired by Cognition (Devin) in July 2025 — now Devin Desktop. Legacy docs are historical.
About
Codeium started as a free AI code-completion tool with extensions for VS Code, JetBrains IDEs, Vim, Jupyter, and more, and in late 2024 the company launched the Windsurf editor — a VS Code fork built around Cascade, an agent that reads your workspace, plans multi-file changes, and runs commands in the integrated terminal. It earned a reputation as the budget-friendly agentic IDE.
Then came July 2025, one of the strangest stretches in recent tech history: a reported $3 billion OpenAI acquisition collapsed, Google DeepMind hired Windsurf's CEO, a cofounder, and key researchers while licensing the technology, and Cognition — the company behind the Devin autonomous coding agent — acquired what remained of the product, brand, team, and IP. In 2026 Cognition folded the editor into its own lineup as Devin Desktop, and windsurf.com now redirects to devin.ai/desktop.
Codeium as a standalone product is therefore historical, not current: old pricing pages, tutorials, and screenshots describe a product that no longer exists under that name, and the roadmap now belongs to Cognition. The software lineage is still good, but you are betting on a new owner's direction.
What it can do
- AI code completion across 70+ languages in the original Codeium product
- Windsurf editor: VS Code fork with the Cascade agentic coding assistant
- Cascade: workspace-aware planning, multi-file edits, terminal command execution
- Switchable frontier models plus Windsurf's own SWE-series models
- Successor product Devin Desktop continues development under Cognition
Setup
- Codeium as a standalone product no longer exists — its successor is Devin Desktop at devin.ai/desktop.
- Install Devin Desktop (or the Windsurf Plugin for VS Code/JetBrains) from the official download page.
- Sign in with a Devin account; free and paid tiers are available.
- Legacy Codeium extensions still in the wild are in maintenance mode, not the upgrade path.
Prerequisites
A Devin account for the successor product. Legacy Codeium accounts and docs are historical.

Trust score — 7/10
Scored 7/10 (verified tier, metrics-v1). Evidence: Codeium began as a free AI code completion tool; launched the Windsurf editor (Cascade agent) late 2024 — verified via multiple 2026 reviews; July 2025: reported $3B OpenAI deal collapsed; Google DeepMind hired CEO/cofounder/researchers and licensed tech; Cognition acquired the remaining product/brand/IP — verified; 2026: folded into Cognition as Devin Desktop; windsurf.com verified redirecting to devin.ai/desktop via curl (308 -> 200). Manual review: listed as rebranded lifecycle — Codeium is historical, not current; legacy docs/pricing should not be used for purchase decisions; roadmap now Cognition's.
