Backstage
Open framework for building internal developer portals: catalog, scaffolding, docs-as-code.
About
Backstage is an open platform for building internal developer portals, created at Spotify, open-sourced in 2020, and donated to the CNCF where it is an incubating project. Rather than being a portal itself, it is a framework: a Software Catalog of services, APIs, and infrastructure, Software Templates (scaffolder) for golden-path project creation, TechDocs as docs-as-code, and a plugin architecture with 200+ community plugins for CI/CD, Kubernetes, monitoring, and cloud.
With 27,000+ GitHub stars, 1,000+ contributors, and 2,800+ adopters including American Airlines, Expedia, LinkedIn, and Siemens, it is the reference implementation for platform engineering teams. It is Apache 2.0 licensed and self-hosted. Limitations: early adopters routinely report months of customization before it delivers value, it demands real React/TypeScript expertise to extend, and commercial no-code alternatives like Port or Cortex can be faster for smaller teams.
