Avante.nvim
Cursor-style AI coding inside Neovim — chat, apply edits, and RAG over your codebase.
About
Avante.nvim brings the Cursor AI IDE experience into Neovim: a sidebar chat that understands your codebase, one-click application of suggested edits directly to source files, and agentic multi-file workflows — all without leaving the terminal editor. With ~18,000 GitHub stars it is the most popular AI coding plugin in the Neovim ecosystem.
It supports a wide provider list — Claude, OpenAI, Gemini, Copilot, Azure, Ollama and other local models — plus a RAG service for codebase context, web search integration, custom tools, and a Fast Apply path the project claims hits 96-98% accuracy on direct edits. Project instructions (AGENTS.md-style files), image paste support, and a Zen mode round out a genuinely ambitious feature set.
The price is complexity: the dependency list is long (plenary, nui, dressing, render-markdown, web-devicons), installation compiles a Rust tiktoken library via make, and you need Neovim 0.10+ with LuaJIT. It is Apache-2.0 licensed and community-maintained, so expect fast-moving development with occasional rough edges rather than a polished commercial release.
What it can do
- Cursor-style sidebar chat with one-click apply of suggested code edits
- Multi-provider: Claude, OpenAI, Gemini, Copilot, Azure, Ollama/local models
- RAG service for codebase-aware context; web search and custom tool support
- Fast Apply for near-instant direct code edits; image paste and Zen mode
- Project instructions files for per-repo conventions; Apache-2.0 licensed
Setup
- Ensure Neovim 0.10+ with LuaJIT and a C toolchain (for the Rust tiktoken build).
- Add
{ "yetone/avante.nvim", build = "make", opts = { provider = "claude" } }to lazy.nvim with the listed dependencies. - Set your provider API key (e.g. ANTHROPIC_API_KEY) or point it at Copilot/Ollama.
- Open the sidebar with your mapped keys and start chatting; use project instructions files for repo conventions.
Prerequisites
Neovim 0.10+; make/cargo toolchain for the initial build; an API key for your chosen provider (or Copilot/Ollama).
