Apigee
Google's full-lifecycle API management platform for designing, securing, and monetizing APIs.
About
Apigee is Google Cloud's enterprise API management platform, covering the full lifecycle: API design and proxying, traffic management, security, analytics, a self-service developer portal, and built-in API monetization with rate plans and billing. It fronts any backend (on-prem, multi-cloud, or legacy) and supports REST, GraphQL, gRPC, and SOAP.
Founded in 2004 by Chet Kapoor, Apigee was acquired by Google in September 2016 for approximately $625M and is now the API-management pillar of Google Cloud, with hybrid deployment (Apigee hybrid) alongside the managed cloud service. Pricing has three models: a free 60-day evaluation, pay-as-you-go starting at $20 per 1M standard API-proxy calls plus environment fees from $365 per month per region, and annual subscription tiers (Standard, Enterprise, Enterprise Plus) that are quote-based. It is the heaviest and most expensive option in the space, aimed at API programs with partner ecosystems and compliance requirements rather than a handful of internal services.
What it can do
- API proxy design with policy-based mediation
- Developer portal and self-service key provisioning
- Built-in API monetization (rate plans, billing, reporting)
- Advanced API security and bot detection
- Real-time analytics and predictive alerts
- Hybrid deployment for on-prem and multi-cloud
Setup
Create an Apigee organization from the Google Cloud console (evaluation org is free for 60 days), deploy an API proxy, and attach it to a backend.
Prerequisites
Google Cloud project; pay-as-you-go or subscription billing for production traffic.
Use cases
Works with
Trust score — 9/10
Scored 9/10 (verified tier, metrics-v1). Evidence: 2016 Google acquisition (~$625M) and current pricing both documented on Google's own pages; full capability set confirmed by Google Cloud docs and independent comparisons. Strengths: definitive enterprise APIM with portal, monetization, and hybrid deployment; deep Google Cloud integration. Docked for: (1) fully proprietary with meaningful cost floor even on pay-as-you-go (environments bill per hour per region); (2) overkill and expensive for small or internal-only API estates. License: proprietary.
