About

Amp is an agentic coding tool that started inside Sourcegraph and spun out as an independent company in December 2025. You drive it from the terminal (amp), a web app, or native macOS/iOS apps: describe a task and the agent reads, edits, and runs commands across your repository to carry it out. Its philosophy is to track the strongest available models rather than lock you to one, with subagents (including a second-opinion Oracle model), shareable threads, and cloud sandboxes (Orbs) for parallel work without a local environment.

The honest picture: Amp does not ask for approval before running tools by default — granular control needs a custom policy plugin, which is a real footgun for teams. Its editor extensions were retired in February 2026 in favor of an ide connect bridge, and custom AI gateways are in early access for higher tiers only. Pricing is usage-based (Hobby free with limits, Individual $20/mo), so heavy agent use costs real money.
