About

Amira Learning sells AI-powered reading tutoring and assessment to K-12 schools. The product listens to a student read aloud using speech recognition, flags mispronunciations and fluency problems, and adapts practice in the moment, while giving teachers instant reports on who needs help with what. CEO Mark Angel describes the approach as AI combined with validated reading science. The company also offers a dyslexia risk screener used for mandated early-literacy screening.

Adoption is Amira's strongest card. It holds statewide contracts in New Mexico ($2.7 million per year for required assessment and tutoring) and Iowa (about $5.5 million across contracts covering hundreds of schools), is required for assessments in Idaho, and is authorized in Oklahoma, Georgia, California, Texas, Michigan, and Massachusetts. It acquired the assessment provider Istation, and districts like San Francisco Unified pay just under $400,000 per year. In 2025 it expanded into Canada through Pearson and the Ontario Education Collaborative Marketplace.

The scrutiny is real too. Reporting has noted that much of the efficacy evidence is company-commissioned without comparison groups, that actual student usage often falls far short of recommended minutes, and that parent communications about AI use and voice recording have drawn complaints. It is a widely deployed product with a contested evidence base, and procurement decisions should weigh the independent evaluations alongside the vendor's studies.

  • Mispronunciation and fluency detection in real time
  • Reading difficulties risk screening for early grades

  • Evidence-based systematic phonics instruction
  • Multi-state and international district deployments

/10 trustVerified

Scored 7/10 (verified tier, metrics-v1). Evidence: statewide contracts in New Mexico ($2.7M/yr) and Iowa (~$5.5M), required in NM and Idaho, SFUSD ~$400k/yr, all 50 states plus international districts (govtech.com; the74million.org; coyotemedia.org); Pearson Canada OECM Ontario deal 2026 (qubemark.com). Docs corroboration: product capabilities corroborated by govtech.com district reporting and the74million.org state-contract survey. Strengths: genuine large-scale deployment, real procurement revenue, acquisition of Istation. Docked for: (1) efficacy evidence largely company-commissioned without comparison groups, with low actual usage flagged by Utah evaluators; (2) parent and privacy pushback over AI voice recording disclosures (coyotemedia.org); (3) institutional-only pricing with no public rates. License: proprietary commercial SaaS, institutional licensing.
