About

Amazon Q Developer is AWS's AI assistant for the software development lifecycle, the direct successor to CodeWhisperer. It lives in the IDE (VS Code, JetBrains), the CLI, and the AWS Console, offering inline code suggestions, agentic chat that can edit files and run shell commands, built-in security vulnerability scanning, and standout modernization agents for Java version upgrades (8 to 17/21), Oracle-to-PostgreSQL conversion, and Windows-to-Linux .NET porting. The free tier covers 50 agentic requests per month; Pro is $19 per user per month with pooled transformation quotas.

The honest picture: in April 2026 AWS announced Q Developer's end of support, directing developers to Kiro — its spec-driven successor — over a 12-month window, with new sign-ups blocked from May 2026. So this is a tool in managed decline, worth knowing mainly if you maintain AWS-heavy systems today. Outside AWS the value drops sharply, and code transformation workloads carry per-line overage pricing that can surprise.
