About

Abridge listens to the clinician-patient conversation and drafts the visit note, billing codes, and after-visit summary directly into the EHR. Founded in 2018 by cardiologist Shiv Rao, the company reached a $5.3 billion valuation after its June 2025 Series E, reporting 150+ health system deployments across 55+ specialties and 28 languages, with Epic integration and a VA enterprise contract covering 75+ medical centers. A 2025 JAMA Network Open study linked ambient scribes to lower clinician burnout, with burnout dropping from about 52% to 39% in the study group.

The other side of the story matters here. In late 2025, class-action lawsuits alleged Abridge-powered recordings at some health systems happened without proper all-party consent under state wiretapping laws, with one complaint claiming the AI inserted false consent language into charts. A separate 2026 JAMA study of 8,581 clinicians found scribes saved only about 13 minutes per 8-hour day, and most physicians offered the tools declined them. Hallucination risk in generated notes is real, and every note needs clinician review before signing.

What it can do

  • Ambient conversation capture with 28-language support
  • Structured note drafting with billing code suggestions
  • Contextual Reasoning Engine for prior-authorization support
  • Epic-native integration (Abridge Inside)
  • After-visit summaries for patients

Setup

Health systems deploy Abridge through an enterprise agreement with Epic (or other EHR) integration. Clinicians install the mobile app, obtain patient consent per local policy, record the visit, and review the drafted note in the EHR before signing. The VA rollout covers primary care, behavioral health, and rehab practitioners.

Prerequisites

Enterprise contract; Epic or supported EHR; clinician smartphones; a consent workflow that satisfies state recording laws.
