Ably

Realtime pub/sub messaging infrastructure with presence, history, and guaranteed delivery.

About

Ably is a managed realtime messaging platform: you publish to channels and it fans messages out to millions of connected devices over WebSockets, with automatic fallback to SSE, MQTT, or long-polling when networks get in the way. The differentiators are the hard guarantees most DIY socket servers skip — strict message ordering, exactly-once delivery semantics, stream resume so dropped connections catch up in order, and device presence tracking.

Beyond raw pub/sub, Ably ships a Protocol Adapters API, a Reactor API for piping message streams into your own compute or third-party systems, and native push notifications via APNS/FCM, plus 25+ client SDKs including first-class Laravel broadcasting support. It runs on its own global edge network (16+ datacenters, 175+ PoPs) and bills on consumption — messages and connection-minutes — with a free tier for development.

The platform is closed-source and provider-operated, so the integrity claims (ordering, exactly-once) are provider-stated rather than independently auditable — though Ably's long track record with live chat, trading dashboards, and IoT telemetry at scale gives those claims real weight. Pricing is predictable but message-volume-heavy workloads should model costs before committing.

What it can do

  • Pub/sub messaging over WebSockets, MQTT, SSE with automatic transport fallback
  • Guaranteed message ordering and exactly-once delivery semantics
  • Stream resume and message history for reconnecting clients
  • Presence: track devices/users entering, leaving, or updating state on channels
  • Reactor API: fan message streams into your own compute or third-party systems
  • Native push notifications via APNS and FCM; 25+ client SDKs

Setup

  1. Sign up at ably.com and create an app to get an API key.
  2. Install the SDK for your stack (npm install ably).
  3. Instantiate new Ably.Realtime(API_KEY), attach to a channel, and publish/subscribe.
  4. Use token authentication for production clients instead of embedding the key.

Prerequisites

An Ably account and API key; familiarity with pub/sub concepts. Token auth requires a backend endpoint to mint tokens.

Trust score — 7/10

/10 trustMetrics-checked

Scored 7/10 (metrics tier, metrics-v1). Evidence: 368 GitHub stars (ably/ably-pubsub-js); repo pushed 2026-10-09 (same-week activity); Apache-2.0 license confirmed via GitHub API; Pub/sub guarantees, presence, Reactor API, 16+ datacenter edge network verified against official docs. Manual review: integrity claims (exactly-once, ordering) are provider-stated and not independently auditable; long production track record supports them; SDK surface is broad and well documented. License: Apache-2.0 (ably/ably-pubsub-js).
